Frequently Asked Questions: What will my project cost?

Money makes the world go around. Money doesn’t grow on trees. Money talks. We have more than a few clichés in the English language on the subject of money. We’re even charged a penny for your thoughts, for crying out loud!

There is no escaping from the fact that the cost of your construction project is one of the biggest factors impacting whether you can even proceed with it. Customers think in terms of how much value the project will add to a property. They think about whether it is cheaper to move house or extend the one they’re in.

And whether its cash, dough, bread, dosh, moolah, spondulicks, or wonga, we all worry about it.

During construction projects, people worry about escalating or hidden costs, how much they need to pay and how often, and how any delays will affect the overall cost of the project.

Let’s deal with each of those worries in turn.

Escalating or hidden costs

You need to get a very detailed, fixed cost quote up front. If it is on the quote, the cost is included. If it is not on the quote and you need it to be, ask your contractor if it is included and make sure it is explicitly stated. As the project continues, if you need to add anything to the original brief, get costs agreed for the extras so you won’t have any surprises.

How much do you pay and how often?

The way we deal with that worry is to provide a payment schedule up front for our customer’s agreement. The payments are linked to stages in the build and are dated for when those stages are due to be completed. Once that stage is complete, an invoice is raised. The stages are spread out for the duration of the project.

How will delays affect the overall costs?

It does depend on what has caused the delay. But in general, if you have a fixed quote, the costs should not be impacted. If something you have requested is likely to have an impact on the costs, that will need to be communicated so you know the consequences.

We don’t want our customers to worry about anything, especially not money. We feel that with good, clear communication, detailed quotes, and transparent payment schedules, there are fewer things to worry about.

And don’t be afraid to ask. After all, we don’t charge a penny for our thoughts or for yours.
